Between Physical and Virtual

The Brain (Building Research and Innovation Networks) project at Coventry University aims to facilitate research processes and particularly collaborative applied research involving researchers, businesses and others.  It is organising a number of events targeted at different areas which it is focusing on. The first of these areas is Serious Games and Creative Industries and the event aims to showcase a number of new technologies and techniques that bridge the physical and virtual in different ways. These immersive technologies blur our perceptions of what is real and provide exciting opportunities in different areas ranging from industry to learning and entertainment.

The aim of the event is to bring together interested researchers and businesses from a number of areas to start a dialogue about how these techniques can be applied to advance research and develop business opportunities. It will use an ‘Open Space’ format allowing participants to decide the questions and issues they wish to discuss in a flexible way, with the aim of coming up with innovative ideas and collaborations. The Brain project is also developing new techniques and systems to link relevant researchers and businesses to help this process. Academics and companies at the cutting edge of these technologies will be present to provide their expertise and help. TheUniversity has put together £1m of investment through the Economic Challenge Investment Fund to help businesses within the region overcome the effects of the recession and the areas of work covered by the event are eligible for support to help develop collaborative opportunities. Staff from the initiative will be available at the event for discussion.

The event will start with a set of demonstrations in the University’s state-of-the-art Bugatti Laboratory followed by the networking and discussion session at the Serious Games Institute. Drinks and refreshments will be available during the event. The Brain project wishes to acknowledge the support and help of Coventry University, the Serious Games Institute, the Serious Games Applied Research Group and the Institute for Creative Enterprise in the organisation of this event.
